9 Great Tips For Preparing For A New Year: In Motherhood And In Life

Resolutions, goals, new years rituals, your word for the year….sometimes all the intention of self-improvement is kind of paralyzing, isn’t it? 

In this article, I share my top tips on how to prepare for a new year as a mom!

 

New Year Tips For Moms

If you’ve been waking up in a panic that you haven’t mapped out your year, are crippled with anxiety about where to start, or feel overwhelmed with all the things you’re supposed to do then these tips are for you.

These are my top tips on how to design new goals, and most importantlyachieve them. 

 

1. Start Small

If you are implementing any sort of resolution or want to start a new habit, start small! Don’t overwhelm yourself with lots of huge changes. Just tackle each improvement step by step and in manageable bite-sized chunks.

 

2. Use SMART Goals

SMART goals are great because they help to set you up for success. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Using goals that have been created using the SMART strategy helps you to reach them. Each characteristic is designed to support your achievement of goals. 

For example, saying you want to ‘be healthier’ is so wishy-washy, that it’s highly unlikely you’ll achieve that goal. Whereas, if you say that you’re going to go to 3 gym classes per week, you’ve now turned that into a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goal.

 

3. Be Patient

Don’t try to make lots of changes overnight and expect it to stick. Often deep change requires time, patience, and consistent dedication. Have patience with yourself and don’t give up on your goals if they don’t manifest within a monthbe persistent and stay in tune with you.

 

4. Focus On One Or Two Goals

Take baby steps and start to change 1 or 2 things at a time. Yes, you may have lots of things that you want to overhaul in your life. But you can’t do it all at once. Focus on one goal (or two max) at a time and nail that before moving on to something else.

    5. Be Consistent And Don’t Overlook Small Changes

    Small daily actions done consistently over time will bring results. Often when we want to make changes in our life we think of the whole, and it seems overwhelming. But the truth is, big changes happen due to small but consistent actions.

    Focus on making small changes but be consistent over a long period of time, and you’ll get the results that you want.

     

    6. Tune Out And Tune In

    When things overwhelm you, take a step back. If you find yourself comparing or jealous on social media, then unfollow the account.

    A variety of clinical studies show the harmful effects of social media. One clinical journal notes that regular users of social media are more likely to experience depression.²

    If you’re struggling to work out what you want, then tune out from the world around you, and tune into yourself. Take the time to sit in silence and be present with yourself so that you can feel into yourself.

    Mindfulness meditation is a great way to build a deeper connection to yourself.

    7. Focus On Gratitude

    It can become really overwhelming when we think about all the things that we want. You might start to feel like a failure because you’re focusing on all the things that you don’t have. Instead, nourish your mental health and think about what you do have, and lean on gratitude for all the good you’re surrounded by.

    During the process of creating goals, remember to reflect on the good and bad of the past year, celebrate all you did do, and let go of what you didn’t achieve. 

    Move on, forgive yourself, and remember that you’re doing the best you can. You still have time and can continue to create your life however you envision it.

    8. Find Balance

    Go easy on yourself. It is important to put yourself first, because your cup needs to be full before you can provide for your family. But, also remember that you’re a busy mom, and that motherhood is a juggle. If you feel more comfortable enjoying your kids and time with your loved ones and want to focus on your goals next yearthat’s ok too!

    If you’re a new mom or have a new baby, there can be a lot of pressure to ‘snap back to normal’, but it’s ok to give yourself the permission to enjoy quality time with your infants, or to do very little during postpartum. 

    Your goals won’t be going anywhere, but your new baby will be a toddler, and then a young child before you know it. Do parenting your own way, even if that means slow living and minimalism to find your flow.

     

    9. Focus On Progress, Not Perfection

    There isn’t such a thing as perfection. Any progress is great progress. You’re not a bad mom, you’re doing the best you can and are wonderfully juggling the household chores, your mental health, and motherhoodyou’ve got this!
