Morning Routine Habits That Make Me A Better Mom | Good Parenting

Getting a morning routine together as a mom can be hard. Sometimes your schedule can be unpredictable. However, I’ve found that having a standard morning routine that I can stick to as best as possible has really helped me to be a better mom!

In this article, we take a look at some of my top morning routine tips for busy moms.

Why Is A Good Morning Routine Important For Moms?

A morning routine is really important for moms because it helps you to get some space for silence and clarity. During this silence in the morning, before the rest of the house wakes up, you get this powerful time to be with yourself without interruptionapart from maybe the dog!

During this time you can tend to the things which you can’t once your entire house is awake. Such as doing 20 minutes of yoga in peace, writing in your journal, reading, meditation, and perhaps even catching up with work emails if necessary.

Having time to yourself, and to be yourself is really vital, and the morning might be the only time in which you can squeeze some ‘me-time’ into your day!

How To Stay Motivated With A Morning Routine As A Mom

Taking the time to get clear on your ‘why’ will be your biggest driver and motivator, especially if you’re not a ‘morning person’. Think of those mornings when your bed is cozy and warm and you just want to sleep a little longer, your ‘why’ will help to get you out of bed!

    Ask yourself:

    • Why do I want to wake up before my kids and start a morning routine?
    • What do I want to accomplish in the mornings and why?
    • What causes me stress throughout the day and why?
    • What’s one thing I wish I had more time for during the day?
    • What’s one goal I’ve been putting off because I feel I don’t have enough time?
    • What kind of home atmosphere and culture do I want my family to have?
    • How do I want myself, my spouse, and my kids, to feel in our home?
    • Where do I want to be in 1 year? 5 years?
    • And what can I be doing now to get there?

How To Create Your Ideal Morning Routine As A Parent

Here are some of my favorite tips that can support you in creating your ideal morning routine.

But, you might want to consider creating different morning routines for different scenarios such as the school morning routine versus the weekend morning routine.

    1. Identify Your Why And Your Pain Points

Your pleasure and pain points are the driving force that will help motivate you. Your why helps you to show up even when you don’t feel like it!

    2. Write It Down

Try writing your ideal morning down on paper or on the notes on your phone. This helps you to remember what you’re supposed to be doing every morningeven when you’re tired and groggy. You can easily update and edit as you go along if you need to adjust your routine.

    3. Start The Night Before

Is there anything you can do the night before to save some time in the morning? How can you use your nighttime routine to help prepare you for the morning after?

    4. Aim To Wake Up At The Same Time Every Day And Avoid The Snooze Button At All Costs

I like to practice the 5-second rule by Mel Robbins. She teaches you to count yourself into something you don’t want to do with a ‘5-4-3-2-1-Go’.

This simple psychological trick helps you to overcome procrastination, hesitation, and resistance to action.

    5. Keep It Simple Sister

Prioritize and write down your most important tasks for the morning routine. Work out which tasks are your non-negotiables, and which ones you’re happy to forget if things don’t go to plan.

    6. Start Small And Test Your Morning Routine

A clinical study notes that choosing a simple action that you can easily do every day can help you to build a new habit.² Don’t overlook small changes because if they’re made consistently they can result in really huge accomplishments.

Start small and prove to yourself that you can be consistent and disciplined, and begin to grow your goals from therea place of self-confidence.

Test your morning routine and evaluate what works and what doesn’tplay to your strengths! If something isn’t working, feel free to remove it from your list and do what works for you.

    7. Stop Making Excuses

Whatever you believe and can conceiveyou can achieve. It is your choice as to whether you make excuses or take action toward your goals. Be disciplined and build a consistent routine that you can stick to.

    8. Make It Your You Time

There are a variety of different things you can do in the morning, but whatever you do make sure you do it for yourself and your mental health. Try to do something that fills your cup, brings you joy, or relaxes you.

    9. Get A Good Nights Sleep

In order to have a good morning routine, you have to begin the night before. A good bedtime routine is so important for creating a better morning routine!

This means getting a good night’s sleep and getting to bed at a reasonable time whenever possible. If you’re exhausted then you’re going to find it so much harder to get up in the morning.

A clinical journal on sleep timing and consistency noted that going to sleep earlier and having regular sleep patterns were associated with better overall health.¹

    10. Eat The Frog

Eating the frog is the method of doing the thing that you least want to do, first thing in the morning. By tackling the biggest, hardest, and most annoying task first of all, it helps to prevent procrastination from setting in.

“How you wake up each day and your morning routine (or lack thereof) dramatically affects your levels of success in every single area of your life. Focused, productive, successful mornings generate focused, productive, successful days – which inevitably create a successful life – in the same way that unfocused, unproductive, and mediocre mornings generate unfocused, unproductive, and mediocre days, and ultimately a mediocre quality of life. By simply changing the way you wake up in the morning, you can transform any area of your life, faster than you ever thought possible” – Hal Elrod
