How And When To Press The Mama Reset Button | Motherhood Burnout Tips

Everyone needs to press that ‘reset’ button at some point in timeor perhaps even multiple times in life!

Perhaps you have lost sight of priorities, are feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, or just like you’re going down the wrong paththere’s nothing wrong with taking the time to pause, reflect, and reset.

The thing is to realize when and how to do this proactively and intentionally. For me, when I realize I need to press that reset button, it isn’t to have a redo but more to get back to my systems and fundamentals that I have worked so hard to implement into my lifeto connect back to me.

I may be focusing so much of my time on one thing that I’m starving in another area of my life. Or have become lax on certain routines that make me fall out of sync with my day to dayleaving me feeling like a chicken with my head cut off.

 

My Top Tips To Help You Reset And Fix Motherhood Burnout

If you’ve found that you’ve lost your way, here are some of my favorite ways to take a pause, and evaluate before moving forward.

 

1. Journal

Try to take time at the end of every month or the first few days of a new month and reset. Reflect on what went well during the previous month. And on what didn’t go as well as you’d have liked, and could be tweaked with improvements.

Write down appointments and mandatory things that can’t be changed. Make goals that you want to accomplish in the coming month. And take time to dream and jot down what you can do this current month to get closer to that dream.

 

2. Make Lists 

Make time to make lists. Prioritize what needs to get done and break it down day by day. 

 

3. Prioritize Some Self-Care

Make the time to decompress. Move your body. Go for a walk. Meditate. Or just turn everything off and get in extra snuggle time. Or, simply just bewhatever takes your fancy! The chances are, if you’re experiencing mom burnout you’ve been neglecting yourself, love yourself back into the vibrant mama that you are!

4. Learn To Turn All The Way Off

Taking the time to disconnect is really vital because during the silence and space, you can find presenceand mindfulness is vital for intentional action. 

Here are some boundaries you can try to put into place when you need a deep disconnection from the outer world:

  • Try not to take or make calls or texts.
  • Take a break from your to-do lists. They’ll still be waiting for you when you are ready to reconnect to the world. 
  • Cut out all unnecessary activities, trips, and responsibilities. Try to reschedule your appointments so that you have free reign.
  • Stay off social media. Social media can be fun, but it can also be all-consuming if you’re not careful. It’s a good idea to have a break whenever you can.

 

5. Simplify Wherever Possible

Evaluate your current schedules, can you find areas to simplify so that you’re being more productive and efficient in less time?

Be honest about your habits. How do you spend your day? How do you care for your health? What habits are working toward creating a better you and which habits are keeping you stuck where you are? 

 

6. Visualise Your Ideal Life

Journal your ideal evenings and mornings, and also just in general what you’d like your ideal life to look like. Evaluate what habits you need to develop to get there. Modern-day motherhood is all about finding the balance between work and play!

    7. Create Some Good Routines

    Notice where you’d benefit from some good routines to avoid mom burnout. How can you incorporate more consistency into your life so that you can achieve your goals and live your most confident life? Something as simple as a good morning and nighttime routine can make all the difference to your mental health!

    8. Check Your Finances

    Finances can cause a whole lot of stress and depression. Do not ignore your finances, even if it’s stressing you out. Evaluate your income and expenditures to find a better balance. Check on your debts and savings. Work out how you can manage your money better to reduce your overwhelm and stress with finances.

     

    9. Evaluate Your Career And Hobbies

    Evaluate what you’re doing, and what you want to be doing. Are the two aligned? If not, work out what steps you need to take to ensure that you’re filling your day with your passions.

    10. Evaluate Things You Dislike

    Don’t just focus on the things that you want to do, and the things that you love doing. Also, get really real and honest about the things that you don’t like or would rather not be doing. Find ways to either remove these things from your life, minimize them, or delegate them out wherever possible. Parenting is not about torturing yourself, especially when you don’t need to. In early motherhood, you’ll often find yourself saying yes to everything. Learn boundaries and say no!

     

    11. Evaluate Your Relationships

    Check in with your relationships. Are they fulfilling you? Do you need to pour more dedicated attention and love into some of your relationships? Or have some run their course?

    Is your circle draining you? Or nourishing you?

     

    12. Learn How To Prioritize

    When you need to slow down, it really helps to learn how to prioritize so that you can create space. Take care of the most important things, and get comfortable with leaving the rest. Chronic exhaustion and mom guilt comes from trying to do too much, all the time. Learn to sleep, rest, and avoid depletion.

     

    13. Positive Affirmations

    Positive affirmations can really help when you’re struggling with exhaustion and anxiety. I like to have a set of positive affirmations written down in my journal so that I can easily reach for them when I’m stressed out or feeling low.

    A clinical journal notes that self-affirmations can play a role in buffering stress and positive self-expression.²
